The Haven operates as a hybrid learning provision underpinned by a strong ethical and legal framework. We are accountable, adaptive, and aligned with both statutory obligations and emergent best practice in alternative education.

● The Haven is currently structured as an independent online provision with a clear trajectory towards Ofsted registration.

● We operate within the legal parameters for unregistered alternative provision, adhering to the DfE’s criteria for part-time education and non-school settings.

● Our safeguarding procedures meet or exceed the expectations of Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) and are updated annually in line with legal changes.

Governance

Proprietor: Cathy Wassell

Leadership Team: Kirsten Roy, Tammy McChristie — co-holding curriculum, systems, safeguarding and pedagogy

External Advisors: We engage independent SEND, governance, and safeguarding advisors on a termly basis

Parent & Learner Voice: Co-creation circles and feedback forums are part of our ongoing governance approach

Policies and Compliance

● All core policies are reviewed annually and shared with staff, learners, and families via our platform

● Policies include: Safeguarding & Child Protection, Online Safety, SEND, Behaviour & Relational Practice, Complaints, and Data Protection

● GDPR and data handling is managed via secure digital systems, with the DPO role held by an external consultant

Future Structure

● The Haven is exploring models of ethical registration including part-time school status, independent special school designation, and cooperative DAO (decentralised autonomous organisation) governance through EveDAO

● We are committed to creating a replicable, legally robust blueprint for other hybrid and neurodivergent-led provisions

Accountability

● We document impact through learner portfolios, EHCP progress reviews, safeguarding logs, and family feedback

● We welcome scrutiny and work transparently with families, professionals and regulatory bodies

● All staff are subject to safer recruitment checks and regular safeguarding updates

Governance at The Haven is not just about compliance — it’s about integrity, responsibility and the long arc of trust. We aim to embody the systems we believe in: decentralised, accountable, and grounded in care.
